Community Halls & RSLs
Best for: Large birthdays (50+ guests), christenings, engagement parties, cultural celebrations
Typical cost to hire: $300–$800 for 4–6 hours
Community halls are the workhorse of Melbourne events. The City of Melbourne and surrounding councils maintain dozens of community spaces available for hire, and they are affordable, spacious, and almost always allow external stylists with no restrictions. The challenge is that they are visually plain — white walls, fluorescent lighting, vinyl floors. This is actually an advantage for us because styling has maximum impact in a neutral space.
What works: Ceiling draping to hide industrial ceilings, fairy light curtains behind the main table, bold balloon installations to create a focal point. Uplighting in your event colour transforms the atmosphere completely.
What to watch for: Check ceiling height — some community halls have dropped ceilings under 3m that limit draping options. Also check if they provide tables and chairs, or if you need to BYO. Loading access is usually straightforward (rear door or roller door).

Backyards & Home Events
Best for: Intimate celebrations (10–60 guests), first birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, small engagements
Typical cost to hire: Free (it is your home)
Home events are our single most common venue type. Roughly 40% of our bookings are backyard or indoor home setups. The appeal is obvious — no venue hire cost, convenient for families with young children, and you control everything.
What works: Freestanding arch backdrops positioned in the main entertaining area, balloon garlands framing a dessert or gift table, festoon lighting draped overhead for evening events. In living rooms, we push furniture back and create a focal wall with backdrop + plinths.
What to watch for: Measure your space before booking. We need a minimum 3m × 2m clear area for a standard backdrop setup. For balloon garlands, ceiling height matters — garlands on frames sit about 2.2m high. Check that we can access the setup area without carrying large items through narrow hallways (side gates and back doors are preferred).
Why it works so well: Home events are intimate. The styling becomes the entire visual identity of the space, not competing with existing venue decor. A $550 setup at home often looks more impressive than $1,500 spent at a venue because every element is visible and intentional.
Function Centres & Reception Halls
Best for: Large weddings (150–400 guests), cultural celebrations, milestone birthdays
Typical cost to hire: $2,000–$8,000+ (usually includes catering)
Melbourne's function centres — from Al Alamy in Hoppers Crossing to Vogue Ballroom in Craigieburn to Le Montage in Epping — are designed for large-scale celebrations. They have high ceilings, dedicated loading docks, and event coordinators who know how external stylists operate.
What works: Floral tower centrepieces create height and drama across 20–30 tables. Ceiling draping in white or ivory softens the space. Entrance features (balloon arch, plinth arrangement, neon sign) set the tone before guests even enter the main room.
What to watch for: Every function centre has its own rules. Some allow ceiling attachment (using their existing rigging points), some do not. Most have strict bump-in windows — typically 3–5 hours before the event. Confirm with your venue coordinator: (1) your setup time window, (2) whether ceiling attachment is allowed, (3) loading dock access, (4) whether open flames (candles) are permitted. Venue reviews on WedShed often include details about bump-in logistics and restrictions from past couples.
Warehouse & Industrial Spaces
Best for: Creative weddings, brand activations, corporate launches, milestone birthdays with a modern aesthetic
Typical cost to hire: $1,500–$5,000
Melbourne's west — Footscray, Collingwood, Brunswick — has an abundance of warehouse spaces that are increasingly popular for events. The raw concrete, exposed brick, and high ceilings create a moody, editorial aesthetic that requires less styling to look incredible.
What works: Festoon lighting is non-negotiable in warehouses — it adds the warmth that industrial spaces lack. Fabric draping creates defined zones within open-plan areas (ceremony zone, dining zone, bar zone). Large-scale balloon installations in organic shapes contrast beautifully against raw surfaces.
What to watch for: Check power access — some warehouse spaces have limited outlets. Battery-operated lighting options exist but are dimmer. Also check if the floor is level (some industrial floors are not, which affects table styling). Loading is usually easy (roller doors), but parking your van on the street during bump-in may require planning in inner-city areas.
Parks & Outdoor Spaces
Best for: Casual birthdays, ceremonies, picnic-style celebrations
Typical cost to hire: $50–$200 (council booking fee for shelter/space)
Park events are popular in Melbourne's west and north where families have large groups and want relaxed celebrations. Most council parks can be booked through your local council website — City of Melbourne parks require a permit for events over 30 guests or any commercial activity. We regularly style at Sanctuary Lakes parks (Point Cook), All Nations Park (Preston), and various reserves across the suburbs.
What works: Freestanding structures only — our arches use weighted bases (sandbag or water-filled), balloon installations go on frames, and plinths are self-standing. Balloon garlands attached to park shelter posts create instant colour and a photo-ready backdrop.
What to watch for: Wind is the number one challenge. Standard balloon garlands can handle light breeze but not sustained 20+ km/h winds. We monitor weather 48 hours before and contact you if conditions look risky. Always book a shelter or covered area as your base — it protects both the styling and your guests. Also check ground surface: grass is fine, but soft/uneven ground requires us to level props.
Cafes & Restaurants
Best for: Bridal showers, small engagements, intimate birthdays, baby showers
Typical cost to hire: $0–$500 (minimum spend)
Many of our clients in Brunswick and Glen Waverley host events at local cafes. These venues already have aesthetic appeal — the challenge is adding your personal touch without clashing with their existing decor.
What works: Subtle additions that layer on top of the venue's existing look. A small balloon installation at the head table, a welcome sign at the entrance, a few plinth arrangements in the corner. Less is more in cafes — you are enhancing, not transforming.
What to watch for: Confirm with the venue what they allow. Most cafes permit freestanding props but not wall attachments or ceiling hanging. Access is often through a single door — we bring collapsible arches and pre-assembled garlands that fit through standard openings. Setup windows may be tight (arriving when the cafe closes, 30–60 minutes before your event).
Choosing Your Venue
